Huiping Iler has a great article over on Digital Web about the importance and details of having a successful international website.

She makes a good point that users want to feel like you are talking to them and understand them. Now if your target market shares your language and culture then having an international website may not be a big item for you. But what if it’s not?

Huiping does a great job at covering seven factors for designing international websites. Her list includes:

  1. Shopping habits differ by culture
  2. Analogies can alienate
  3. Colors have cultural significance
  4. Symbols are not all universal
  5. Weights and measures should be appropriate
  6. Text swell can ruin your website design
  7. Be sensitive
