A little about Vernon...

Hey there everybody, I’m Vernon. I’ve been a full-time freelance web designer since 2002 and can honestly say it’s been a great journey.

If you’re interested, take a look at my services site and let me help you with your project.

Finding the time to write
April 9th, 2007

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

As you notice, I haven’t been posting a ton over the past few weeks. It’s not because I don’t have anything to write about, or that I don’t want to. In fact, I’d love to!

Of course, we all know that business comes first. I write on here as a way to share things I come across that I think would be helpful to other designers and developer. This blog is an outlet for me and something I do as a hobby.

I’ve been working as a full-time designer/developer (yes I do both!) since 2002 and things are going great! That’s the reason for the lack of posting going on lately. (Remember the “business comes first” part earlier?)

I’m working on 12 different projects now and it seems like a new one comes in every day or so. Which is great! Unfortunately, it doesn’t leave me with any time to post around here.

Hopefully I’ll be able to plan my schedule out a little better so I can get back to posting at least a few times a week. Let me tell you, my moleskin planner is definitely getting a workout!

Smashing Magazine is holding a logo design contest. They are looking for a unique, fresh and stylish identity and are holding this contest to find it.

You can submit up to 3 designs in the contest. Feel free to send a watermarked version, but they won’t use your logo without your permission regardless.

So what’s the prize?

The winner gets the SimpleTech SimpleDrive External. It’s a stylish, quick external hard drive with 250 GB capacity and Hi-Speed USB 2.0. Besides, winner’s name will appear in the footer of every Smashing Magazine’s web-page - as long as we use it, of course.

What is required?

In order to participate, design:

  • a distinctive Smashing Magazine logo for our header.
    Max. height: 65px.
    Max. size: 20 Kb.
    Format: .gif or .png.
  • a Favicon.
    Size: 16×16px or 32×32px.
    Format: .ico.

Read more about it over on Smashing Magazine.

Kevin Gibbons recently posted a thread over at the Search Engine Roundtable Forums about how his site had been removed from the Google index.

Come to find out the Blogger tag < $BlogMetaData$> that produces the meta tags for the site included the < meta name="ROBOTS" content="NOINDEX,NOFOLLOW" /> meta tag to all of his blog pages.

Kevin luckily figured it out fairly quickly and hard-coded the meta data himself. However, it looks like most Blogger templates use the < $BlogMetaData$> tag so it’s definitely something you should check in to if you are using Blogger for your blog.
